SUCCESS STORY

Nex'idea, the hackathon aimed at creating in-house star-ups to rethink the city of tomorrow

Hackathon

Nexity is France's leading real estate group, active in all areas of real estate development and services (residential real estate, commercial real estate, real estate services for individuals and real estate services for businesses, networks and customer relations, urban planning), with a strong presence across all cycles (short, medium and long term).

Innovation is part of the Nexity Group's DNA. The Innovation and New Businesses Department (DINM) is a cross-functional department that enables the Group to meet its transformation challenges through innovation. As part of its innovation strategy, Nexity decided to host a Hackathon.

Nex'Idea is an innovation competition open to all Nexity Group employees (10,000 people). They try to meet new challenges and respond to strategic issues targeted by the Group. The aim is to get as many employees involved as possible, and enable them to put forward their ideas for new professions, new businesses, new products, new methods... to create the city of tomorrow.

Nex'idea, a digital hackathon

To meet Nexity's challenges, Exoflow built this hackathon around 4 key moments:

Call for ideas

Right from the launch and for 5 weeks, all employees were challenged by the Strategic Committee to respond to the 7 themes of 2020. The aim was to post as many ideas as possible (products, services, new internal processes) to meet Nexity's future challenges. At the end of this first stage, the best ideas were selected to continue the adventure.

Call for people

This is the stage during which teams are formed around ideas that are transformed into concrete projects. This second selection round, which lasted 2 weeks, enabled all employees to apply to carry one of the selected ideas. Each project had to be carried by a complementary team of 4 people.

We selected the 80 intrapreneurs (20 teams of 4) who were able to access the training and project acceleration phase based on their motivations and the diversity of the teams.

Training

The 80 employees selected to carry out the projects benefited from training time. The aim is to acculturate the teams to new working methodologies, but also to give a boost to the various projects.

Of the 20 teams taking part in the training, only 8 were selected for the final. This selection was made on the basis of two criteria:
- The quality of the project: final training pitches (reading grid provided by Exoflow).
- The quality of the team: number of Nexi'Coins (currency designed for the competition) obtained by each team during the training.

Teams not continuing the adventure were able to hand over their Nexi'Coins to the team of their choice.

The final

The finalist teams presented their projects to a jury made up of members of the Strategic Committee. The 5 winning projects were then invited to join the Startup Studio for a 4-month incubation period.

Acculturation to innovation

Developing a true culture of innovation means making it exciting, inspiring and easy to access for as many employees as possible.

Exoflow prepared a selection of the best nexi'tubes videos (x13), which were shown to employees every Monday for the duration of the program.

Every Friday, an Exoflow consultant led a 1.5-hour online webinar to discuss the videos with the volunteers.

A chat room was also made available to participants who wished to discuss the videos in greater detail.

Gamifying the hackathon

To make the experience more fun, we used games. The Nexi-Coin is an incentive currency that gamifies the call for projects and encourages candidates to actively participate and surpass themselves at every stage of the process.

There are several ways to earn Nexi-Coins
- Team building: the more diverse the team, the more Nexi-Coins it earns at the start.
- Training: each stage of the training is associated with an educational game. The most assiduous and talented teams earn the most Nexi'Coins.
- Nexi'Tubes follow-up: Nexi'Coins are earned for each participation in the weekly webinars (after the training).

Afterwards, teams had the opportunity to register their Nexi'Coins to benefit from exoflow and DINM advantages.
- Pre-Final: logo creation, online pitch coaching, business model coaching...
- Final: request last-minute support (pitch coaching, slide creation, etc.) and choose your running order.

A graphic identity was also designed exclusively for this innovation competition. The result is a dedicated universe.
